Cassels & Sons Milk Stout

Cassels & Sons Milk Stout 5.2%
Sweet Stout Wins Out (Carl Hadler)
Dispensed by a traditional handpump, this beer was the gold medal and trophy winner for the best cask conditioned beer at the 2011 Brewers Guild of New Zealand Awards. And if you’re thinking dry and bitter, like that famous Irish stout - forget it!
Pouring an intense black hue beneath a deep, tan coloured head, the aroma is appetisingly rich, with a sweetish, mocha-like combination of chocolate and coffee notes dominating. Creamy and smooth, with just an edge of sweetness, the combines milk chocolate, caramel and soft fruity esters and leads into a cleansing finish with an ashy, charred malt note and suggestion of tart hops.

Deceptively suppable, this rare example of an old English style is wonderfully flexible when it comes to food. Try it with barbecued ribs, nutty or buttery cheeses, fruit-topped cheesecake, or a slice of rich fruit cake.
Geoff Griggs – October 2011

Gold Award & Trophy Winner at the Brewers Guild of New Zealand Awards (2011) ! Sweet, rich and smooth with a creamy mouth-feel and a hit of golden syrup on the nose.
'Pours black with a small white head. Perfect temp to be served at. Light charred chocolate tones and milk powder present in the aroma. Creamy milk chocolate throughout with a hint of sultanas to go along for the ride.
Very solid beer.' Source RateBeer.com (maneliquor) Perth, Aus - AUG 15, 2011

'Deep black colour with a small nod to rosy notes. Mocha head that endures and leaves good lace. Charry stout aromas, typical of New Zealand stouts and even milk powder present in the aroma profile. Tastes of coffee roastiness and [is] smooth and silky on the palate. This beer has good body and isn’t repulsively sweet. It gives a long finish and does exactly what it says on the tin. I’m pleased to see a milk stout that I can happily drink more than one of in one sitting'. Source RateBeer.com (jimthechap) Christchurch, NZ - JUL 11, 2011
