Christchurch has been moved by a lot of things lately and that includes local 7-piece reggae band Merchants of Flow. This band has risen from the rubble of a city that is desperate for something positive. Amongst the constant aftershocks, stress and anxiety is a group of musicians who are out there helping people dance and making people smile. For months now Merchants of Flow have been doing their part for this shaken community.
When the earthquake hit on February 22 the boys of Merchants of Flow had a dilemma. Five of the band members were from other parts of the country and they had to consider the option of returning to their home towns and abandoning the young band. But the boys knew that there was so much potential with Merchants of Flow.
The drummer needed to return to his family in Taranaki but the rest of the band made a decision to stay. Bass player Christian Gallen remembers the struggle, “Before February 22 we were booked out for months at bars, festivals, weddings and were even supporting Salmonela Dub on their Christchurch tour but in a moment all of that was gone. We had no practice space and all our band gears were stuck behind cordons. And we needed a new drummer”. The story even appeared on I AM TV in June. It was unanimous that the band was keen to keep jamming and share their music with the people. So they found an incredible new drummer who has been involved in the Christchurch reggae scene for years and began the struggle to booking in some new gigs.
As soon as they could the Merchants offered their music to audiences who had seriously been affected by the earthquake in a number of post-quake benefit gigs. It has been months of hard work and now the band is in heavy demand across the South Island. They have been playing to crowds from Christchurch to Dunedin and are a regular floor-filler at Fox and Ferret Riccarton.

“Ireland really set the tournament on fire and it will be great to have them back in New Zealand next year. It is particularly special that they will play in Christchurch at the redeveloped Rugby League Park – the first Test match in Christchurch since the Canterbury earthquakes.

As electronic dance music (EDM) has spread around the world, it has started drawing it's influences from the countries it has touched. A new breed of producers are looking to their own indigenous and folk roots and blending it with EDM to form what has become known as Global Bass. From the guitar and vocal based sound of Colombian nu-cumbia, to the carnival beats of Brazilian baile-funk, to the dirty dusty sound of Angolan kuduro, to the tribal prehispanic sound of Mexican 3ball....this is The Ghetto Electric Sessions.
After growing tired of the repetitive emotionless sounds of dubstep and drum and bass, Wubzilla and DangerGirl both looked to Global Bass for inspiration and quickly gained a reputation for their track selection and mixing amongst this growing worldwide scene. DangerGirl is best known for being one of the first DJs worldwide to embrace a burgeoning genre called Moombahton (where tribal drums, dembow rhythms and heavy bass meet the dancefloor), whilst Wubzilla prefers the more latino and afrobeat influenced sounds.
Genre: Country / Lyrical / Rockabilly If artists like Neil Young, Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Dave Dobbyn or Don McGlashen ever floated your boat, you’ll seriously dig Lindon Puffin - Jeff Neems, Waikato Times.
Seth Hamilton's been rocking Christchurch for years, he's held some of the most prestigious residencies and dropped the ill at all the top festivals. Now he's mainly found on the airwaves of RDU 98.5FM with his radio show "The Get-Down", blasting out modern takes on tried and true block rocking beats, be they funk, soul, rock, classic hip-hop, rock or rave, all warmed up with tonnes of swag and oodles of booty shaking bass.
